What residential proxies are

A residential proxy uses an IP address handed out by a consumer internet provider to a real home connection. That's different from a datacenter proxy, which uses addresses registered to hosting companies. To a website, the first looks like a household and the second looks like a server rack — and it can tell the difference by looking up who owns the address.

Why they get you past captchas

A captcha isn't the punishment; it's the symptom. The site scored your request as suspicious and asked you to prove otherwise. That score comes from a handful of signals, and the IP is the heaviest one.

When the request arrives from a residential IP with no abuse history, the score starts low and most sites never bother to challenge you. Arrive from a datacenter range that a thousand scrapers already burned through, and you'll see a challenge before the page even paints.

The other three signals worth fixing while you're there:

• Request rate. Twenty pages a second from one address is not a person. Slow down and spread across the pool.
• Fingerprint. Headless defaults, missing headers and a stale user agent all cost you.
• Session behaviour. Jumping IP mid-checkout looks worse than any single address ever could.

How to actually use them

Rotate for reading. Product pages, search results, listings — take a new IP per request and the volume disappears into the pool.

Stick for anything with state. Logins, carts and multi-step forms need one IP from start to finish. Use a sticky session of 10 to 30 minutes and let it expire naturally.

Target the right country. A UK site served to a UK visitor gets fewer challenges than the same site served to an address in a country it doesn't ship to.

Back off when you're challenged. Don't retry the same URL twenty times. Rotate, slow down, and come back.
