What Are Backconnect Proxies?

The idea

Instead of giving you a list of addresses, a backconnect proxy gives you one hostname and port. Every connection you open through it is routed to a different machine in the provider's pool. The "backconnect" name comes from the architecture: the exits connect back to the gateway, and the gateway hands your traffic to whichever one is available.

Why it replaced IP lists

Maintaining a list means health-checking every address, removing dead ones, replacing burned ones, and updating configuration everywhere it's used. A gateway does all of that on the provider's side. Your configuration is one line and never changes, even as millions of exits rotate behind it.

What you control

Through the username string or dedicated ports, you typically set:

  • Country, and often state, city or ASN
  • Rotation policy — per request or a sticky session with a lifetime
  • Session ID, so you can deliberately hold or release an exit
  • Sometimes protocol (HTTP or SOCKS5) and IP quality filters

Where it fits

Backconnect is the natural fit for residential and mobile pools, which are inherently transient. It's less relevant for ISP and dedicated datacenter addresses, where the whole point is a fixed IP you own for the month.

Things to check

How large is the pool in the countries you care about? Is the gateway itself geographically distributed, or does all traffic detour through one region — that detour is pure added latency. And how quickly are unhealthy exits removed? A big pool full of dead addresses performs worse than a small clean one.
