What your IP address reveals

Public IP versus local IP
Your device has a local address on your own network, usually something like 192.168.1.20, which nobody outside can see. Your public IP is the address your router or provider presents to the internet, and it is the one shown here. Every site, API and ad network you touch records it.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
Country is right almost all the time. City is an estimate derived from provider registration data and routing, so it is often the nearest large city rather than your own. Mobile connections are the least precise because carriers route large regions through a handful of gateways.
Checking that your proxy or VPN works
Load this page without a proxy, note the IP, then load it through your proxy or VPN. If the address, ASN and country all change, the tunnel is working. If the IP changes but headers still carry your original address, the proxy is transparent and should not be trusted for anonymity.
Changing the IP a site sees
