Which Proxy Type Should You Use For Ad Verification?
Ad verification only works if the ad server believes you're a real viewer. That rules out most IP types before you start.
What you're checking
Whether your creatives actually appear where you paid for them, whether the landing page matches the ad, whether competitors are bidding on your brand, and whether affiliates are running placements they shouldn't. All of it depends on being served the same ad a real person in that market would see.
Why the IP type decides everything
Ad servers filter aggressively. Datacenter traffic is treated as invalid and either gets no ad at all or a default fallback — which means you verify nothing and don't know it. Verification data collected from the wrong IP type isn't weaker, it's simply wrong.
The right choices
Residential is the baseline. Real consumer addresses, city-level targeting, and enough scale to sample many placements per market.
Mobile for in-app inventory and mobile web. A large share of programmatic spend is mobile-only, and carrier IPs are the only way to see it.
Datacenter only for infrastructure checks — is the tag firing, does the creative file load — never for what's being served.
Setup that produces usable data
Match every signal to the market: IP country and city, browser language, timezone, and a device profile that matches the inventory you're checking. Rotate between checks so you don't build a profile that gets targeted differently, and sample repeatedly across the day — auctions vary by hour.
Record the exit IP, city, timestamp and full creative with every observation. Without that provenance, a discrepancy report is just an assertion.
Common mistake
Running verification from one office location and assuming national coverage. Ad delivery differs street by street in some networks; if you're paying for geo-targeted inventory, verify from inside the geography you bought.
